Case Study | AWS Auto-Scaling Architecture for Traffic Spikes
One of our clients experienced occasional traffic spikes where a high number of concurrent users accessed the website simultaneously, causing performance issues and downtime. Book Strategy Call Handling High Concurrent Users Without Permanently Scaling Infrastructure One of our clients experienced occasional traffic spikes where a high number of concurrent users accessed the website simultaneously, causing performance issues and downtime. Since these traffic spikes were infrequent, permanently upgrading the infrastructure was not a cost-effective solution. Our team designed and implemented an AWS auto-scaling architecture that automatically increases server capacity when traffic rises and reduces infrastructure when demand returns to normal. Result: Improved website reliability during peak traffic while keeping infrastructure costs under control. Traffic Spikes → Website Downtime → AWS Auto Scaling → Automatic Instance Scaling → Improved Reliability & Cost Optimization How We Investigated We analyzed the client’s infrastructure and identified that the existing setup was not designed to efficiently handle sudden increases in concurrent users. The key challenges included: Occasional traffic spikes with a high number of concurrent users. Website downtime during peak traffic. Infrastructure capacity that was insufficient during sudden demand. Permanently scaling the infrastructure would increase costs even when traffic was normal. The application required a scalable database architecture to support multiple application instances. Based on the analysis, we determined that an AWS-based auto-scaling architecture would provide a more flexible and cost-effective solution. Root Cause The primary issue was the lack of dynamic infrastructure scaling. The existing infrastructure was sized for normal traffic and could not automatically add additional resources when traffic suddenly increased. Because these traffic spikes occurred only occasionally, maintaining larger servers permanently would result in unnecessary infrastructure costs during normal traffic periods. Our Solution We designed and implemented an AWS architecture capable of automatically adjusting resources based on website demand. 1. AWS Elastic Beanstalk Configured AWS Elastic Beanstalk to manage the application environment and support automatic scaling. 2. Load Balancer & Auto Scaling Implemented a Load Balancer with Auto Scaling to distribute incoming traffic and automatically launch additional application instances when demand increases. 3. Optimized Baseline Infrastructure Reduced the size of the always-on server infrastructure to avoid unnecessary costs during normal traffic periods. 4. Amazon RDS Migration Migrated the database to Amazon RDS(Relational Database Service), allowing multiple application instances to connect to a centralized database. 5. Automatic Scaling Configured the environment to automatically launch additional instances during traffic surges and terminate unnecessary instances when demand decreases. Result Improved Reliability During Traffic Spikes The new AWS architecture enabled the website to dynamically respond to changes in traffic. During normal traffic, the infrastructure operates with a smaller baseline configuration. When traffic increases, additional application instances are automatically launched to handle the increased demand. Once traffic returns to normal levels, unnecessary instances are terminated. Better reliability during peak traffic, improved scalability, and controlled infrastructure costs. The Value We Delivered Client Challenge: Website downtime during occasional traffic spikes Traffic Volume: High Concurrency simultaneous users during peak periods Root Cause: Infrastructure was not dynamically scaling with demand Solution: AWS Elastic Beanstalk + Load Balancer + Auto Scaling Database: Migrated to Amazon RDS for centralized database access Scalability: Application instances automatically scale based on demand Cost Optimization: Reduced always-on infrastructure and avoided unnecessary permanent scaling Business Impact: Improved reliability during traffic spikes while keeping infrastructure costs under control Ready to Build Something Exceptional?
